I am all smiles right now after testing out my new Feld DA 2! I feel honored to ride this impressive a bike as it really is a super-bike. Well balanced, fast, reliable electric shifting, and also just cool looking! I am a big fan of the black and white paint job that Felt does so well on their top end models. This guy also comes with a clever aero-water bottle that I would like to believe drew its inspiration from my own ‘custom’ gel bottle I constructed a few years back from an old shampoo bottle. While I can’t comment on all aspects of the bike as I have only done an easy hour on it, so far it is simply superb. Lets see how it really rolls this weekend in 70.3 St. Pölten!

A bit delayed in posting on this race but better late than never! A week ago I capped off my training camp in Spain with participation in TriStar 111 Mallorca. The event was intended as a ‘cleaning out of the cobwebs’ inorder to be really prepared for my main race calendar starting in May. Despite my coach’s insistence that the race was really just a training exercise, I still went into it thinking I would fire on all cylinders and put in a great result. I guess this is where I need to learn to trust my coach! He is always right…

The race actually was not bad at all but for sure it was not what I was hoping with my own hyped-up expectations going into it. I made a few mistakes tactically and the disgustingly ‘Finnish’ weather (it was about 10C and raining) threw me off a bit. But in the end I put in a top 3 run time and finished 7th overall, which is probably just where I should be this time of year.

I was particularly pleased with my run as I proved to myself I can really run fast after a hard bike. And that bike was HARD! 1600m climbing with two times up the San Salvador climb! It would have been spectacularly fun to ride that course if it had not been so cold, wet and slippery, but conditions were what the were, so I ended up being a nervous wreck coming down the super technical descent.

Back in Finland now and getting started on the 2nd phase of my season training program with a new round of base training. Only about 4 weeks away from 70.3 Austria where I am really excited to put my fitness, especially my new running ability, to the test of top competition!

I am here in Calella just north of Barcelona for a training camp with a few friends. We are staying in a massive hotel that happens to be a gathering place for budget tourists from UK, US, Germany and Spain. Maybe I have become a dry Scandinavian type but this tourist culture is insane! The hotel has over 1000 guests and by my estimates at least 50% of them are smashed every evening. In case that isn’t enough, they all have little kids running around at all hours of the day causing trouble! I have been hanging out in the bar as it is the only place with internet and even at 11 o’clock at night, there are small kids (3-4 year olds) being towed around by their sun-burnt, intoxicated parents. Madness I say!

On the training front, this is a bit of a funny couple weeks of training as I have to balance coming off a big block of tough training last month with the start of my first big race in a few days time. The result is a mix of faster training with quite a lot of rest and overall a low number of hours training. To be honest, it feels a bit weird to come to Spain for training camp and do such limited hours, but I trust my coach and I believe he knows what I need to go fast come race day. While I would love to be out hammering long hours, at least the time I have spent has been very productive in getting me comfortable on the tt bike again. The first ride I thought something was wrong with my bike because my balance and sensations were so off. But now a few rides done, all feels great and I am feeling much more ready to race!

The rest of the spare time I have here I am using to get a lot of work done for my normal copy writing job. At home I could never get this amount of time to really concentrate with two young kids around the house, so this is a welcome opportunity.

Since my last race in Paris about a month ago I put in a huge block of training with consistent 25+ hr weeks and additional intensity speed training. Apparently the results are starting to show already as I ran a new PR in 10km today with a time of 32:37, which is about 1 minute faster than my previous PR. I can also give some of the credit to my new shoe sponsor Newton because they truly have made an immediate difference in how I run.

I have long been an admirer of the Newton concept of forefoot/neutral running shoes but never took the step to try them out for fear of change. Newton is making a big push to expand outside of the US where they are most well known and needed an athlete from this area. I jumped at the chance and have been incredibly satisfied with the shoes. The Newton’s are crazy light and very natural feeling on your feet. My lower legs took a bit of adjusting to the forefoot landing but within a couple weeks they are 100% in tune with the new running technique.

For those of you who don’t know about Newton running shoes, they are designed with a set of lugs under the forefoot that extend down an additional 1/2 cm or so to make contact with the ground a bit earlier than normal. When your full weight comes down onto the lugs, they push up into the sole and are not noticeable. It might sound a bit funny but once you see a pair and try them (or at least Newton’s website) you will understand how they function. Anyways, I will come back to the subject of Newton later on once I put them to test in a triathlon, but so far, 1 min off a 10km PR is a good start!

Next up is a training camp in Barcelona for 10 days followed by my first triathlon of the year with Tristar Mallorca. High motivation after such a strong start to the season!

I returned from Paris where my wife and I enjoyed a wonderful weekend. Most couples probably spend their Paris vacations doing romantic things like strolling down the Champs Elysees or basking on the lawns surrounding the Eiffel tower. While we did get a chance to do some of that, our motivation for the trip was to suffer for an hour and change to try to better our pr 1/2 marathon times.

Last autumn we selected Paris half marathon because it was very early in the year in order to give us a jump start on the season both physically and motivationally. Maybe we are getting old but finding motivation over the tough winter months is getting pretty hard these days, so having this early season goal was needed.

At least in my case, setting the goal paid off and I trained very well over the winter with thoughts of Paris. My wife got a bit overloaded with work and was not able to produce the performance she wanted but ended up being pleasantly surprised to put in a solid time despite very limited preparations.

Going into the race I had in my head a sub-1:10 time but I also knew it would be a pretty massive step up from my previous best of 1:12.56. My coach Jesse had prepared a race plan for me to do near 1:11 and I have quickly learned to trust his predictions because he is right 99% of the time.

Despite my coach’s strict guidelines, I started way too fast with first 5 km at pace for a 1:09. Part of this was nerves and part was the conditions for the beginning of the course were super fast, so it felt easy. If the course had continued like that I might have been able to maintain the pace but no such luck. The 2nd half got a steady head wind and most of the elevation gain as well, which put a heavy dent in my speed. Never mind the always increasing muscle pain coming from the first real tough run in many months.

Suffering through the final kilometers, I pushed hard to keep a respectable result and ended with 1.11:56, which was about a minute under my previous PR. This is a very satisfying result as my previous best was done three years ago at peak condition in September on an easier course. Never mind that my training leading up to this race was tough all the way until two days before, so I was pretty tired just waiting on the line. I can now rest assured my training over the winter is really making a difference and I am on track to make my larger goals for this season.

Next up is a tough block of training to be ready for training camp and first race in about a month’s time.

Ever since I took a tumble on some small French road back in 2004, my body has been a bit finicky and susceptible to knee, IT band and hip/back problems. You may notice the picture below there is a bit of damage to that beautiful piece of Italian machinery. My knee was the cause of that destruction so I should not be so surprised I have had a few issues since then.

For the longest time I was trying to fix where ever the pain was, for example knee pain, I went to see a doctor to check my knee. But never during the years that followed did anyone, including myself, think if checking if my back might have been causing the problems. Then about a year ago my wife had some intense back pain from pregnancy and needed to find a solution just to walk normally. Reijo Karppinen from Kuntotus Karppinen was able bring almost immediate relief and my wife was pain free within a few days.

A few months later I did a bit too much heavy lifting on our landscaping project and ended up with a painful back for a few months. My wife reminded me how quickly Mr. Karppinen was able to help her so we set up an appointment. When I arrived, I stumbled my way through the first interview (in Finnish) to explain my current problems and long term issues as well. Reijo seemed to connect all the dots immediately and knew exactly where to poke my back to test his hypothesis. A couple minutes later his son arrived to assist with the ‘manual’ therapy, which is quite manual. The two men did some serious adjusting of my hips and back with a series of accompanying pops. Just like my wife experienced, my pain was gone within 24 hours. Then 48 hours later I did a half marathon in near personal best time with admittedly poor fitness.

Now I make a routine trip to Helsinki to visit the Karppinen clinic every month as we continue to make adjustments to my back and hips. The process will likely continue for some time as I have been training and racing for years with my back and hips out of alignment. The muscles surrounding will likely take a while to adapt back to a normal position.

Hats off to my friends at Kuntotus Karppinen! Those guys really have magic hands!

As my base phase training is now wrapped up, I have been working hard to finalize my season’s schedule. Currently I have tickets booked to Paris half marathon, training camp and race (tbd) in April in Spain, 70.3 Austria in May, 70.3 Switzerland in June, 70.3 Antwerp in July, 70.3 European championships in Germany in August, and finally Frankfurt marathon on October. The main event missing from my reservations is the 70.3 World Championships in September as I still need to qualify first. Atleast I am putting in the work now to ensure I am in Las Vegas for world championships.

I am super excited to have the opportunity to do this schedule, although it has been a tough sell for my family that I will be traveling this much. I am currently taking care of our kids during the day, so when I leave for these trips it creates some tricky logistical problems. It seems as though we have found solutions to allow me to pursue my goals in triathlon, for which I am extremely grateful to my family for helping to make this happen. I only hope my results will come as I hope so I can in some way pay back for my family.

But today is a much needed rest day after four solid weeks of training. Finally an evening I don’t have to sneak away to finish my trainings!

This year I have made quite many changes in my training, most notably a commitment to doing serious time on the bike trainer/rollers and running treadmill. Luckily I have a wonderful room at home dedicated to my training, which makes it easier.

Before this winter I despised indoor training and went a few years without touching the bike trainer. With my new program I am putting in some substantial hours every week.

Yesterday I experienced some thing new; after tapping out over two hours of tempo workout on the trainer, I looked at the floor and thought I saw puddles of liquid near the corners of the room. My initial reaction was to blame our dog for the mystery liquid, which is a normal problem in our house. After carefully inspecting the questionable substance, I decided it was not my dog’s doing but had no idea what it was and where it came from. A few minutes passed and my mind finally connected the dots.

I had been sweating with a fan blowing over for more than two hours and had the door closed. The moisture coming off me had condensed on the cold granite floor and formed small puddles. I guess that was me marking my territory not my dog…

2012 is firmly underway. I started off the year actually in November when I decided to start working with coach Jesse Kropelnicki from QT2 Systems. This was a big step in committing to racing full time this year and so far I am incredibly pleased with how my training is progressing.

Now into my second month of training, I am starting to get comfortable with the rythme and volume, which is all new for me. While the total hours per week is adding up quite well, I am surprisingly not tired despite including large amounts of power workouts. Overall the training feels very well balanced and all my test results are showing strong improvement already. Off to a good start!

The first race is still a long way off, which is good considering I had virtually no base training for the past two years, so our first task in my training is to build a solid base. Diet is another key change in my approach to triathlon. For those who know me, eating healthy has not been a high priority the past few years. Kebab, Pepsi Max, coffee, and anything sweet were the staples of my diet. All that has changed now and pretty quickly I am feeling a large difference. My energy is much more stable and my recovery is impecable thus far. Not to say these were easy changes. Pepsi Max has been a vigorous addiction the past few years and coffee is a long time friend of mine.

As the hour is getting supremely late, I should cut this post short, but I will continue my outline of the 2012 season in the coming days. Stay tuned!

The past couple of years I have been dabbling in triathlon with far less than 100% effort and focus. Most of my energy has been put into our house project and our growing family. While I have no regrets choosing this path, it has been non the less frustrating to feel I am missing a real opportunity to reach my full potential and do something special in triathlon.

This autumn I attended an ITU coaching clinic to start developing a long term option to stay involved with sport and give back the knowledge I have accumulated through my experiences. During this coaching course I began to realize how little I have applied myself to triathlon and how big room for improvement I have. I spoke with one of the instructures, world renowned running and triathlon coach, Bobby McGee, and asked his opinion on my situation. Not only did Bobby encourage me to commit full-time to triathlon but he also helped to set me up with a great coach in Jesse Kropelnicki, to make it happen. My friend John Spinney also highly recommended Jesse and put me in touch with him.

Jesse has taken a careful look through my past training and race results and constructed a strategy to reach my full potential, which he also agrees is much higher than my current level. Jesse believes I have the ability to be one of the top professionals in endurance triathlon if I can make some significant changes in my training and preparation. This has given me real confidence that I really do have the ability as long as I am willing to commit 100% to the sport and make sacrifices in order to address some of my weaknesses.

We have build a race calendar of 7-8 half distance events building toward the main goal of the Ironman 70.3 world championships in September. This is a massive commitment not only from myself but from my family and sponsors, so my greatest appreciation goes to them. I have a lot of work to do just to secure enough sponsorship to travel to all these races. I am working on developing creative ways to raise this sponsorship and I will be outlining them here in the coming weeks. Please stop back soon for updates!
